The Problem

Parents with non-standard staircases—split levels, curved railings, open banisters, L-shaped entries, or missing walls—struggle to find baby gates that actually fit. Off-the-shelf gates assume standard rectangular openings between two parallel walls, leaving parents with unsafe gaps, incompatible mounting options, or no viable product at all.

Potential Solution

A web/mobile app where parents upload photos of their staircase and enter basic measurements. The tool analyzes the layout, identifies mounting challenges (no wall, curved railing, banister spindles, asymmetric openings), and recommends specific compatible gate products with exact hardware and adapter kits needed. For truly non-standard setups, it generates a custom gate spec and connects users to vetted fabricators or offers a direct-to-door custom gate service.

Why Now?

The baby-proofing market continues to grow with rising safety awareness, yet modern home designs increasingly feature open-concept layouts, floating staircases, and non-traditional railings that standard gates cannot accommodate. Parents are turning to online communities in frustration, signaling a clear gap between available products and real-world staircase configurations.

Baby proofing struggle
I did this too and it worked great. Used a pressure mounted gate until my son started using his rolling walker as a ramming device against the baby gate.

Baby proofing struggle
This is what I did. I had banisters that didn't line up well but did so enough to allow the 1.5" rubber feet to fit firmly against both sides. Assuming there's a stud behind the furthest left drywall, you should be able to squeeze it behind that handrail trim. Check out the Regalo Safety 29"-38.5" Easy Step Baby Gate on amazon, that's what we went with.

Baby proofing struggle
Just get a pressure mounted one. Or gate the baby’s room at the door frame. We tried the top of the stairs and it frustrated everyone so we ended up doing the bottom of the stairs so they can’t climb and doing the room(s) so they could get out. The pressure ones aren’t as secure but by the time that’s an issue they can usually climb anyway.
