Users managing NAS systems, storage shelves, and personal servers struggle with storage capacity decisions. They face complex choices about drive sizes, RAID configurations, and upgrade paths, often unsure whether to replace drives, add more bays, or restructure their setup entirely. This confusion leads to either expensive over-provisioning or prolonged research and manual planning.

Hi All, I have an existing EMC KTN-STL3 disk shelf using a LSI SAS 2008 HBA. I have installed 5 Seagate Exos ST28000NM000C 28TB Drives. My disk caddies have a SATA / SAS interposer on them. I installed the disks without issues and they power on. However the shelf is not showing them to the host at all. I contacted the seller and it seems they mention that they have tested this configuration with larger 22TB drives and those work. I was looking and it seems these drives are 4Kn drives not 512e and this can cause issues? Is there any way I can get these drives to work? My HBA has very old firmware and I could flash it with one 9 major versions newer but want to know if that would help first. Id love to not have to buy a new disk shelf. Any help you guys can offer would be great! I am still figuring all this out.
So I have a synology 6 bay nas (I know, I know) I currently have 80 TB of storage and am out of space. I’m looking to replace the drives for more space and am looking for a recommendation on where to find 22+ TB drives. Any suggestions on where I can get 6 without spending a small fortune would be super appreciated. Thanks.
I've been running TrueNAS on an old office PC with 4 4TB drives in RAIDz2 giving me 8TB usable for the last three months. Through owning a camera that shoots 10-bit 4K DCI and a flourishing radarr/sonarr setup I'm now at 500GB left. What is the most efficient way to get more storage? I think I can't just add more drives without losing efficiency (?) so I have to reshard every drive. Do I get 8 TB? 12 TB? Both options are putting me at just about 800€ just for drives which kind of does not feel great haha. Should I start over somehow and have more bays? Maybe I could just transcode everything I have to AV1/HEVC somehow? I really don't know what to do.
