Simulate and optimize mini PC, NAS, or desktop builds for Plex transcoding and self-hosted services with performance predictions

Home server enthusiasts waste weeks manually researching hardware for Plex, *arr apps, and Docker services, struggling to match CPU/RAM/I/O capabilities to workload requirements. They face decision paralysis between mini PCs, NAS devices, and desktops, with no clear data on performance gains from separating compute and storage or transcoding capabilities for 4K HDR content.
A web-based simulator where users input their service stack (Plex streams, torrent clients, ad blockers), performance targets, and budget. The tool benchmarks thousands of hardware configs (Intel NUC, Minisforum, Synology, DIY) against real-world service profiles, generating optimized build recommendations with predicted FPS, concurrent stream limits, cost analysis, and visual architecture diagrams for compute-storage separation.
Mini PC market has exploded with 40+ new models in 2023-24 offering diverse CPU/GPU options, while 4K HDR content and AI services push NAS devices beyond their limits. The self-hosting community grew 300% since 2020, creating urgent demand for data-driven hardware decisions beyond Reddit opinion threads.
Hi everyone I lurk this sub a lot but haven’t posted much, I’m very amateur I just have an old desktop running Proxmox with a handful of services, but I’ve previously hosted Plex for myself and friends and the absolute top of my priorities since I got started is getting a storage solution sorted out. I’ve finally got a job and saved up some cash so I’ve been looking into ways forward. My desktop that handles Proxmox right now is just so old, I built it as a teenager and it was formerly a gaming PC, I used to have a part list for it but not so sure anymore. It sits under my desk and honestly I just want to replace it, maybe if I could ever switch out the mobo/psu/cpu I could run it as a PMS, but for now I really want to upgrade. I need mass storage for anything I’m going to do, this is unavoidable. As far as I can tell, there’s two routes forward: Buy a mini PC, probably like a Beelink with one of the Intel Quicksync cards for Plex transcoding. Then get something like a QNAP DAS and just connect it via USB. But, I read somewhere (and I don’t know how legit this is) that it’s better to have drives plugged directly into the mobo via SATA, rather than running them all through USB. Plus, to me, a Mini PC and a DAS are much harder to open up and replace parts in than if I just buy a case and fill it up. That being said, right now is clearly one of the worst times to build a PC (like it has been for years). What I thought would be a relatively cheap machine turned out to be around $1400 on pc part picker. Now, to be fair to myself, when I went into picking the parts I was working with the goal of being future-proof for any expansions and future projects I want to take on. I honestly don’t mind the steep price, I could do it, I just want to get some input from this really experienced community before I do anything. Here’s my part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Lunut/saved/qphmFT It’s pretty bougie I think, definitely could cut corners on some parts — to be honest I haven’t put together a parts list in a long time, so if anyone has any recommendations (if you think this is the better route) please let me know. I’m noticing that I put this list together yesterday also and it was 1400 — now it’s 1600, lmaooo. The market seems totally nuts right now and either way I have some more saving to do, but I just want to plan ahead and see what everyone here thinks if possible. I’d really appreciate your input, and I hope everyone is having a nice Thanksgiving if they’re in the States and celebrate :)
Hi! I have an RS 1221+ currently being used for backups as well as a Plex server with the arr's, adguard, scrypted, deluge, qbittorrent, etc all in docker containers. My question is, would I benefit from moving all the services over to a mini pc and leaving the Synology to just be a fileserver? Some things *I think* I'd gain: \- faster + snappier Plexamp \- containing all my torrenting to an SSD on a mini pc, thus, saving my hdd's on the synology \- gain ability to transcode 4k HDR remuxes? \- faster overall performance of all my services? \- faster scrypted to homekit loading of my security cameras (maybe)?? Am I wrong about my assumptions? Any benefits I'm missing? Is this not worth it and I'm just looking for an excuse to spend money? Side note: If a mini PC turns out to be smart, what are the recommendations for a good setup?
