Taxpayers are discovering unauthorized tax agent registrations, altered bank details, and shared personal data without consent. The ATO portal provides no proactive monitoring, leaving individuals vulnerable to fraud and identity theft that they only detect after financial harm occurs. There's no easy way to verify agent legitimacy or control who can access your tax records.
A SaaS platform that continuously monitors the ATO portal for changes to tax agent appointments, bank details, and contact information. Sends real-time alerts via SMS/email for unauthorized activity, provides instant verification of tax agent credentials and business registrations, and maintains a digital consent vault where users can approve or revoke agent access with one click. Includes a full audit trail of all portal changes.
Surge in tax-related identity fraud, increased digitization of tax systems, recent major data breaches raising security awareness, and new privacy regulations mandating explicit consent for data sharing create urgent demand for taxpayer-controlled security tools.
I have been receiving several texts like this over the last few days. They are addressing me by name and using a legit registered tax agent website. At first, I thought it is some sort of eleborate scam. However they called me yesterday to "approve my return", when I asked them where did they get my details from, they said "from the ATO". I am now thinking that it is actually a legit tax business that is somehow getting these details from the ATO and cold texting/calling to get new clients. Can tax agents do that? Is this legal/ethical? How are they getting this information? Is the ATO allowing them access to people's information?
I was hoping to find help instead of echo chambers and hopefully this post will be get more helpful anwsers than the last one. I have been contacted out of the blue by a dodgy tax agent to "approve returns" via text/calls. I never signed up with them, I never authorised them, I never gave them any details, I never click dodgy links. Without much help from this sub, I have finally found where you can see tax agent details in the ato website. I have now discovered that They have registered as my tax agent! Of course, i will be contacting ATO first thing on Monday. They have very good reviews on google (fake) but very poor reviews on any of the legit reviews sites. How are they able to do that without me authorising them? How can they keep away with this? How can they access my ato portal without approval? How did they get my details? Why did the ato accept the authorisation?
Hi all, It was my brought to my attention from another accountant, that the previous accountant I used for last years tax return, had changed my details on the ato website. My bank details and contact number was changed to theirs. I was expecting money back, but never received it. Before jumping to any conclusions, why would they do that ?
Can my acountant share my details and change my tax agent without my consent? My accountant has engaged with a cloud based AI driven backend accounting company. I received a letter of introduction from my accountant and advised that my details were passed to the new firm and within a week they have appeared as my registered tax agent on the ATO portal. I really don't want my sensitive details being passed to another firm without first being asked if I would like to do this. So is this ok, legal and aligned with the tax board practices?
Sorry if this is the wrong sub, but I need to get a new tax agent for my tax return submission. I booked in with a new firm. When I look up the business it is listed as registered tax agent but I can see nothing of any specific individuals in the business being listed as tax agents. How does this work? Does this imply because the business itself is listed that whoever is see at the firm qualified as a tax agent? Any clarification would be much appreciated.
