The Problem

Small businesses, local service companies, and Shopify stores are starting to test whether AI tools recommend them and often find they do not appear at all. The causes are usually practical and fixable: blocked AI crawlers, stale sitemaps, missing schema, weak FAQs, thin authority content, orphaned pages, and unclear product or service data. Owners understand the revenue risk but usually lack the technical SEO and AI-search expertise to diagnose it themselves.

Potential Solution

Offer a fixed-scope AI visibility audit followed by an implementation package. The first deliverable checks robots.txt, sitemap health, schema, llms.txt, page structure, FAQ coverage, content freshness, product or service data, review signals, and prompt-based visibility across target categories and locations. The follow-on service implements fixes directly in Shopify, WordPress, Webflow, or the business website CMS, then reruns benchmark prompts after indexing windows.

Why Now?

AI search is becoming a discovery channel for local services and ecommerce categories, but most business websites were built for classic SEO rather than AI retrieval and citation. The signals show confusion, active buyer questions, and early service providers finding repeatable technical issues.

What decides whether ChatGPT mentions a business, and how to check yours for free

Been digging into how AI tools decide which businesses to name when someone asks for a recommendation. Its less mysterious than it sounds, and you can check where you stand without paying for anything. The check: Pick about 10 questions your customers genuinely ask, phrased the way theyd type them. "affordable wedding photographer near brighton" rather than "wedding photography". Your inbox and sales calls are the best place to grab the exact wording. Run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in a private window. Do each one two or three times, because the answers shift more than youd expect. Note whether you show up and who shows up instead. What it usually comes down to: Where the answer comes from. These tools lean heavily on outside sources, review sites, directories, comparison articles, and a lot of reddit threads. If the same few sites keep feeding answers about your competitors and youre missing from all of them, thats the real gap, more than anything on your own site. Reddit in particular. Both Google and OpenAI license reddit data and threads turn up in answers constantly. If a thread already exists for a question your customers ask, a genuinely useful reply in it can do more than weeks of on-site work. Genuinely is doing the heavy lifting there, people spot a drive-by plug fast. Whether they can read your site at all. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot are listed with Disallow, youve blocked them from reading you. Its one of the most common issues and one of the quickest to fix. Plain old SEO. Ahrefs found about 38% of the sources cited in Google's AI Overviews were already ranking in the top 10. Ranking still gives you the best shot at being quoted. Two things id skip for now. Paying for daily AI rank tracking, since the answers are random enough that day to day changes are mostly noise. And anyone promising a guaranteed spot...

SEO + AI Search: Ask Me Anything

I work with businesses on SEO, local SEO, and AI search visibility, and lately I’ve been seeing a shift in what actually matters for getting discovered online. Traditional rankings are still important, but now there’s another layer: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, etc. A business can rank well in traditional search and still not be mentioned or recommended by AI when potential customers ask for businesses in their area or industry. So I’m curious: What’s the biggest SEO problem you’re dealing with right now? Could be: Ranking but not getting leads. Getting buried by competitors with fewer reviews. Struggling with local SEO/Google Maps. Traffic dropping despite good rankings. Not appearing in Google AI Overviews. Not being mentioned in ChatGPT/Perplexity. Unsure how to approach AI SEO/GEO. Something completely different. Drop your situation below. Happy to break it down and share what I’d investigate first.
