When a family member dies, survivors face an overwhelming maze of tax obligations: filing final returns, handling forms like 1098s and 1099s issued to the deceased, tracking down unknown bank accounts and assets, resolving RMD penalties, and dealing with uncooperative institutions. Most people have zero experience with estate tax rules and struggle with IRS forms (5329, 8332, etc.) that assume expert knowledge.
A guided software tool that walks executors and administrators through every post-death financial obligation. It identifies which IRS forms are needed based on the deceased's situation, auto-fills fields using plain-language Q&A, generates institution contact letters (banks, brokerages, property managers) to correct records, and provides an asset discovery workflow integrating unclaimed property databases and FINRA BrokerCheck. Built-in document tracking ensures nothing falls through the cracks during probate.
The massive generational wealth transfer from Baby Boomers is accelerating, creating millions of new estate administrators annually who are unprepared for the complexity. Meanwhile, IRS enforcement on estate compliance is tightening, and existing tax software like FreeTaxUSA and TurboTax handles deceased filer scenarios poorly or not at all.

My father passed away in April of 2021. My aunt was named executor of his will and estate as well as trustee over his trust. My aunt has refused to do her job so I finally acquired the legal ability to become administrator to my father's estate. After this long there are no physical pieces of mail or bank statements that I will be able to get ahold of. Is there an efficient way to track down what banks my father may have had accounts with? It is possible my aunt has this information but she has been uncooperative and will likely require a court order for her to hand over that information.
I am having quite the time with part IX Additional tax on excess accumulations due to an administrative error on my Mother’s 401k RMD for 2025. She also received an IRA distribution and I can’t figure out lines 52 a&b and lines 53 a&b. We are requesting a waiver to the penalty because of a change in administrators she didn’t get her RMD for 2025 until mid-February 2026. They enclosed a typed up a waiver letter and included a blank form but I am having problems with the wording on the instructions for part IX. Her total rmd for the IRA was $2102.29 which she did receive in 2025. Her 401k rmd was $8626.90 which she did not receive in 2025 but did get during the correction period. Can anyone please help me understand this?
Hello, Here is my situation My mom passed away in 2020, and my dad did not notify our property management company. Her SSN was on last year's 1099 from the property management company, and the tax preparer accepted it as part of dad's taxes. His name was on it, if that matters. In April 25, dad passed away, and I have notified them. I have been fighting with the property management company to get a proper 1099. They still issued this year's 1099 in my mom's name and SSN. My tax preparer told me to contact the property management company to reissue the 1099 in my dad's name until the house changed ownership. The property management company refuses to do this. What do I do?
My dad has been deceased for 12 years. I am finding statements from a utma account from 2012. the statement is from Columbia management, now Columbia Threadneedle and the broker is deceased and the successor companies (Centra and LPL) have no record either. I cannot find any record of the account existing with any of them. I have already checked unclaimed property for my state. What else can I do?
