Im seeing a pattern where my performance reviews are more and more becoming about being better at gathering, and confirming functional requirements. Historically I’ve been given functional reqs and focused on documenting and delivering on the non functional requirements (eg uptime, reliability, maintainability, extensibility, etc?), but I’m seeing a preference to just hand wave this now. More and more I’m asked to include functional requirements in my tech briefs and being asked did you check data, talk to the customer/operations to confirm? My tech briefs are starting to become project briefs with a side of tech. It’s kind of demoralizing because organizing functional requirements feels like an admin job, and then you start getting pinged for a bunch of data support issues because X isn’t Y etc. It all contributes to time away from understanding/staying abreast the underlying tech. Is this a trend, or something unique to my org? Edit: I get this mentality for a startup since everyone has to wear a bunch of hats, but I’m experiencing this at a large org where it’s a huge lift to understand systems end to end.
Interviewing for a new team in the same overall org at my big tech company. Previous manager who I worked with closely on launching one of the first AI large scale products reached out to me to ask me to join his team. A lot of previous team members. For compliance reasons have to interview the same as external candidates. 2/4 interviews done. Failed both easy style leetcode problems due to severe performance anxiety. I’ve done these problems before but not in a few years. Does anyone else have this issue? How do you deal with severe coding anxiety in interviews? For reference, 18 years of experience, top reviews and bonuses every year, built features millions of people use. Propranolol didn’t help.
I've been a dev for 16 years. Coding is not new to me and I don't have trouble navigating around my preferred coding language in a business environment. The problem is, when I get into these interviews that I care deeply about (especially the technical interview), my hands shake, my mind blanks, I instantly start profusely sweating, and I struggle comprehending basic instructions given to me. This makes me come off looking unprepared and unskilled, despite usually spending 3-6 hours prepping for each interview. I've had this problem going back to grade school and choking on big tests that I wanted to do well on. It's not something I can overcome by "thinking positively" or "trying not to care", which has been suggested to me repeatedly. I don't want to feel this way, but I can't stop feeling this level of anxiety no matter how much self-talking I do to try to decrease it. In instances where I'm allowed to do a take-home test (which is something I can sit down, do slowly, think through, and code out), I code just fine. It's specifically having a group of peers stare over my shoulder while I stutter-type out code in panic mode that sends my anxiety into overdrive. It's not imposter syndrome, just performance anxiety. I'm aware of my skill level and I don't have a problem keeping up with other senior devs when I'm hired and working a job. (sidenote: I'm autistic and this level of anxiety is a common trait) I can't be the only one this is happening to. Does anyone have advice on how to deal with it? It's been nearly a year of job searching, attending around 15-20 interviews, and I need to find some way to improve my ability to do a technical under such duress to finally land a job. I've had times during interviews when I've acknowledged my problem with performance anxiety and times when I've said nothing. I've also asked for take-home tests over live coding sessions, but that rarely works and seems to throw up red flags. **TL;DR** Keep failing technical interviews due to performance anxiety. On one hand, I feel like my technical skills will atrophy. On the other, it's becoming more obvious that this type of work is significantly more valuable to a company at this stage. Wondering how other's have handled the time away from coding and how it affected their career. Thanks for any anecdotes. For clarity, some examples. There's definitely some coding happening but it's not the center piece. - prototype of some new products but with heavy emphasis on the product/business case and much less so on the engineering and then hand off to other engineers when it's proven out - lots of coordinating with operations to make sure they have the automation they need - building data pipes for marketing to track spend/roi - a lot of analysis, given I'm handy with data/math, for product, finance, marketing, etc as prep for board/investor meetings Overall these projects have given me a lot of business and domain context. But definitely a step away from technical work.
