The Problem

Small law firms often review revenue and overhead without reliably assigning attorney time, staff time, and case-specific expenses to individual matters. This prevents owners from seeing gross margin by case type and can lead them to accept unprofitable work, price matters incorrectly, or spend money on growth before delivery economics are sound.

Potential Solution

Provide a recurring managed accounting service that restructures the firm's financial records and matter data into case-level profitability reports. The operator reconciles collected fees, labor allocation, and direct case costs, then conducts a monthly review that recommends pricing, staffing, and case-mix changes. The initial offer should be delivered through existing accounting and case-management systems rather than requiring new software.

Why Now?

Law firms increasingly rely on multiple staff roles, marketing channels, and case-management systems, making revenue alone a poor measure of financial health. The repeated discussion of gross margin across episodes separated by nearly a year suggests a persistent operating problem rather than a temporary concern.

When a Major Client Defaults: Protecting Your Cash Flow
It's the Bottom Line that Matters Podcast
S2

Yeah, that might even be valuable enough, if you don't have, like, lots and lots and lots of clients, if your concentration is reasonably high, to have a dashboard view somewhere showing, you know, client one, this percent, client two, this percent. At some point, it's not necessary. But if you have a small number of clients, it might be valuable to have that. Absolutely. Dashboards are always good to be seeing what the business is doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, one, know what your numbers are. And two, have some means of keeping abreast of at least the bigger clients, you know, so that you know what's going on in their business. Right.

The Law Firm Owner Podcast

What she's talking about is there's a, there's a client dashboard. So you can go, you guys submit data every month. And that's in spreadsheets. These spreadsheets power visual insights. And so that's what you can go look through. There's a page for income. There's a page for expenses. There's a page for owner comp. There's a page for marketing. There's pages of data. You can go look at the charts on those and producer information is one of them. And that's where that producer multiple was. And it does. Yeah, it does. It helps. It helps just keep you connected to what's happening. I would love for you to share a little bit about, there's two things.
