The Problem

Audiobook listeners frequently lose their place when an app crashes, updates, switches devices, connects to a car, or mishandles downloaded files. Existing players often provide only one current position, so a bad synchronization event can overwrite the last reliable checkpoint and force listeners to search through hours of audio.

Potential Solution

Build an offline-first audiobook player that records a timestamped listening history and creates automatic restore points whenever playback pauses, chapters change, or devices synchronize. Start with locally stored, user-owned audiobooks and Audiobookshelf libraries, adding simple folder import, reliable chapter handling, and an interface for restoring any recent position. Sell the complete player as a one-time purchase, with an optional paid synchronization service.

Why Now?

Listeners increasingly combine downloaded files, self-hosted libraries, phones, tablets, and vehicle playback, while incumbent apps continue to lose progress during synchronization and updates. The evidence also shows willingness to pay a modest one-time price for a dependable, subscription-free player.

Best audiobook app I've found. I am hearing a kind of static/crackling sound occasionally when listening tho, any idea on how to sort that? Edit** This worked, had no problems since. Thanks. Edit 2: 8 years later it's still the best audiobook app. It just works.

Excellent App When It Works This app is phenomenal most of the time. It’s fairly intuitive and once it’s set up it just works. The only issue I’m having is that streamed audio stops after about a half hour of playback and then it cannot find connection to my media server. Works fine with downloaded audio but the only way to resolve it is to restart my phone with is a big inconvenience for something so simple.

Player doesn’t work. This app doesn’t work if you want to listen to audiobooks, that is unless you like listening to the same track over and over. Here are the problems I see (1) the app will randomly start a track over but it doesn’t go to the beginning of the track, it goes to about the 3 min mark, and (2) the app won’t allow you to fast forward past that point. So unless you like listening to the same part of the book over and over there is no point using this app.
