This is what I did. I had banisters that didn't line up well but did so enough to allow the 1.5" rubber feet to fit firmly against both sides. Assuming there's a stud behind the furthest left drywall, you should be able to squeeze it behind that handrail trim. Check out the Regalo Safety 29"-38.5" Easy Step Baby Gate on amazon, that's what we went with.

Baby proofing struggle

Just get a pressure mounted one. Or gate the baby’s room at the door frame. We tried the top of the stairs and it frustrated everyone so we ended up doing the bottom of the stairs so they can’t climb and doing the room(s) so they could get out. The pressure ones aren’t as secure but by the time that’s an issue they can usually climb anyway.

They make some gates that are basically rolled up nets that you can use to cover weird angles and shapes. We have one because the gate needs to cross our hallways at an angle. One you lock it after extending its really pretty solid. Search for "retractable baby gate" - I don't want to add a product think here

Stairgate issue, advice needed

Someone already linked to Cardinal gates, which is what you’re looking for. A word of warning: Whatever you do, do NOT put a retractable gate at the top of stairs. The flexibility means your child will find a way to get through and fall down the stairs. Same with tension gates. No retractable gates and no tension gates. Get something that you screw into the walls.
