The Problem

Hardware-wallet owners cannot easily determine whether an existing seed phrase was generated with sufficient randomness. When firmware or random-number generation is questioned, updating the device does not repair an already weak seed, while an improvised migration can expose the new seed or permanently lose funds.

Potential Solution

Offer an appointment-based migration ceremony in which the customer generates entropy with supplied dice or coins, creates the wallet on isolated equipment, verifies recovery, and rehearses a small transfer before moving the remaining balance. The operator supplies equipment, a documented checklist, privacy controls, and live guidance but never handles funds, records the seed phrase, or takes custody of signing devices.

Why Now?

A widely discussed hardware-wallet entropy failure has made seed-generation integrity an immediate concern. The incident also demonstrates that apparently valid seed phrases can remain vulnerable for years and cannot be repaired through a firmware update alone.

It's not even about hardware. Random is hard. Like, making a good random in a computer is an incredibly hard problem. If you want to have your wallet secure, use an offline machine to generate your wallet, then put it into hardware, and this way you sidestep any potential generator problems with your hardware wallet. But even then, like, the whole point of this exercise is that, like, again, cryptographically secure random is the default. Don't use not cryptographically secure random. People use it multiple times and paid for it, starting, like, as deep as TCP protocol. People decided that some not very random values were actually cryptographically secure.

Chase, you had an article about these devices, the hardware wallets. Yeah. They used a deterministic pseudo-random generator instead of the hardware generator. It's a fun one. Which I think, you don't need access to the hardware, right? Because the, like, resulting keys from that are crackable because they didn't use a good random seed.

Still using Coldcard but with great entropy?
i checked if the dice rolls gives correct seed with a set of test-rolls/test seeds: 1.5.0Q gives correct dice rolls seeds. I will never ever trust any RNG, it does not matter what company it is. I trust my 🎲 and verify they are compiled correctly to seed. I cannot verify a RNG, I cant read code, but I can roll 🎲 and verify it. Iportant: never ever use those tested/verified dice derived seeds. Test - dump - make fresh rolls and use that for seed.
