What comics to get?

Hey! I'm wanting to get into Marvel-comics, but struggling where to start. Seems to be so much good material. I specifically want to get more stories about spider-man (yes, partly cause i watched "Brand new day"). But also want to know different arc's and characters as well. Is there a good place to start, or a collection that anybody recommends? Always a fan of gritty comics btw.

Manga fan getting into comics, how do I start ?

"Western" comics have a different big-picture structure. Anime and manga rely mostly on tropes and cliches to streamline visual storytelling and make it intelligible. Superhero comics instead rely on iteration and repeating/re-occurring elements of each character's mythos—allies, enemies, powers, places, totemic weapons. People typically choose one or more characters that really appeal to them aesthetically and thematically, and then explore that character's many iterations over the years. Golden/Silver/Bronze Age books, post-Crisis/modern, before and after big retcon and crossover events, Elseworlds and What Ifs where everybody's a vampire or a pirate or Godzilla shows up. In each of these new settings your fave will still be there with their people, places, weapons, and powers, but reimagined—and that's where a lot of the fun lies.. So where anime has however many "young man learns to summon spirits to battle for him and turns out to be the best at it" as the core trope for a bunch of different stories (eg Shaman King in the 2000s and Jujutsu Kaisen now, plus MANY others), in comics the equivalent would be a bunch of different versions of a single repeating character reimagined by many different writer/artist teams. Definitely check out a bunch of characters if possible. Browse your local shop for cool covers, get free trials of the DC and Marvel apps (fair warning the DC app is a lot more navigable), etc. Find the character(s) who click with you :)

Manga fan getting into comics, how do I start ?

Long time comic shop employee here. Getting into comics is kinda like getting into movies. There isn’t one place to start, and there are comics of all kinds from all genres from many *many* styles of artists and writers. That being said, here are some of my favorites to recommend. If you want to be in on the current hot book, DC’s Absolute line is very good. Batman and Wonder Woman are my personal favorites, with Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern coming in right behind. For Marvel I’d say try Marvels from Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross. You’ll get a wide view of the Marvel universe so you can get an idea of what you want to dive into further. For DC I’d say The New Frontier for the same reason as The Marvels. If you like Shonan I’d recommend pretty much anything written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson. He has great action and excellent characterization. Start with Murder Falcon and thank me later. If you’re interested in nonfiction I’d recommend the recent Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton and the classic Maus by Art Spiegelman. For dark crime stories I’d recommend anything and everything by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Seriously, these two basically don’t miss. For Science Fiction I’d say Saga if you don’t mind waiting a long time for the ending to ever come out. Otherwise Ascender and Descender by Jeff Lemire are a good two book series. If you like D&D or fantasy Die by Kieron Gillen and it’s currently releasing sequel Die: Loaded are very good. For romance I love Always Never by Jordi Lafebre For Horror you could either check out some of the classic Tales from the Crypt comics or the many works of James Tynion IV, but specifically Something is Killing the Children and The Department of Truth. For comedy/slice of life Giant Days by John Allison is essential. I could keep going, but my point is there’s so many kinds of comics. Manga fan getting into comics, how do I start ?

Hello! I'm also an former otaku/nerd that picked up on comic books this month. I picked up TMNT because I've always find them cool. A small intro from what I've learned: \- Marvel timeline is continuous since the 1960's, so, technically, if you'd like to start "from the beggining", you could go back that far. But you could also pick up from the 2000's, for example, and pick up context as you go. \- DC has been rebooted 2\~3 times. It might be easier to pick up from modern times, the last reboot was in 2010's. There's also the recent Absolute DC universe, an alt-verse that started launching less then 2 years ago. I think that DC has more "stand alone" stories then Marvel, but I might be wrong. Famous characters such as Spiderman and Batman usually have more prints and it's easier to find their material (altought collector's stuff could be more expensive). Maybe share what type of hero/adventure you're looking for, and people could give more advice. I felt very overwhelmed as well!
